I pray.
I'll admit... sometimes, I am inconsistent... but I do my best to take a moment every day to stop and appreciate where I am, contemplate where I'm going, and invoke the help of my higher power to get me there. Prayer and meditation have been shown to have a lot of health benefits, but mostly, I do it because it helps me feel grounded, centered, and at peace with the world. I'm sure you can see how that might have a positive impact on someone's psyche, health, and life.
Some of you might be uncomfortable with the idea of a higher power but we all have one, whether we recognize it as such or not. Who do you turn to in your time of need? Family? Friends? Your inner self? Music? Art? Facebook?
There are so many ways to pray... whether it's reciting a previously memorized prayer from religious doctrine, meditation, observing nature, reading spiritual text and contemplating it, or even visualization, but one of my favorite ways to pray is through music. For me, the most effective prayer is that drenched in emotion. After all, the limbic system is where our feelings of timelessness and connectedness reside.
As I was praying with this song this morning, feeling so overwhelmed with gratitude, it struck me how appropriate this emotion was for this week of thanksgiving. I'm sharing this with the hope that you will also find peace, comfort and gratitude in your own version of prayer.
How do you pray? Let me know in the comments below.
